Idle Champion Spotlight: Nixie
Posted in Idle Champions.

"If the trees are thin, let the flames begin, if the trees are tight, do not ignite."

Some folks never bother to ask how big the room is; they're always ready for a fireball. And Nixie is the quintessential firecracker, able to light up a room with her bright smile and her flaming hot spells!

I. Nixie

Nixie is a charismatic tiefling who grew up in a wealthy but oppressive household, and punished for using magic despite her natural talent. In a rebellious move, she stole the family grimoire to teach herself dark sorcery only to result in the burning down of her family manor and all her family inside. Despite this tragedy, Nixie is now on a journey to enjoy her newfound magical freedom and find a new family.

Nixie is a DPS and Support Champion who gives charismatic Champions like herself a big boost. When force is required, she casts Fireball, and when stealth is required...she casts Fireball. But her magic isn't perfect as she inadvertently triggers the occasional wild magic surge. Once unlocked, you can find this Tiefling Sorcerer in Slot 1 opposite Bruenor.

II. Nixie's Stats

Race: Tiefling Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Gender: Female Pronouns: She/Her
Age: 19
Affiliation: Awful Ones Class: Sorcerer (Wild Magic)

STR: 8 DEX: 14 CON: 17
INT: 3 WIS: 8 CHA: 20

Role: DPS, Support

Eligible for Patrons: Vajra

Slot: 1 (Bruenor)

III. Nixie's Design

When 1 For All crafted characters for their fantasy comedy web series, they leaned into some of the beloved tropes that can be found in many D&D PCs. The joy of casting a fireball never grows old, and it can be fun to create a chaotic character who crafts flames with unbridled enthusiasm!

Nixie is sparkly, cute, and uncontrollably deadly! She delights in jumping into the throes of battle casting fireballs, despite it possibly harming her own team members. With her Blazing Charisma she gleefully increases the damage of other charismatic Champions, but every spell cast is a chance to cause a random Wild Magic Surge. Some surges cause a bonus effect on the battlefield, like engulfing enemies in flames, creating a coin cascade, summoning a random monster, causing a stunning shockwave, or enlarging both her size and her damage! But sometimes she'll turn into a potted plant, or her skin will turn blue. That's the risks that come with being a Wild Magic Sorcerer.

Despite the unpredictability of her magic, Nixie is always ready to launch a flaming attack on her enemies. Normally it's a smaller Fireball?. But occasionally it's time for a FIREBALL!!! This ultimate, gigantic fireball engulfs all enemies on the field, burning them to a crisp. Those flaming spheres can cause even more damage depending on which Specialization Nixie chooses. Each one boosts the damage bonus of Blazing Charisma based on who else is in the formation. Infernal Impact focuses on the number of Tieflings, Anarchy Amplified works with Chaotic Champions, and Flawed Force counts the number of Champions with a total ability score of 78 or less.

Nixie's natural talents bring a chaotic element to the party, and she'll charm you over with her bright smile and even brighter explosions!

Idle Champion Spotlight: Dungeon Master
Posted in Idle Champions.

After five years of Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms, we have reached an auspicious occasion, our 100th Champion! There have been so many iconic characters from Dungeons & Dragons lore, novels, campaigns, and shows, who have joined our Champion roster, it was difficult to think of an extra special character that could take on the mantle of 100th Champion. The only choice was to not choose a player character after all, but the Dungeon Master!

Dungeon Master is the powerful, enigmatic, patient, and mysterious Champion who is always happy to help the formation. He may be a busy guy who can't always come along to every area, but he's powerful enough to make sure the formation is never without assistance. After all, he's the DM; he can make his own rules!

I. Dungeon Master

Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Master

He is Dungeon Master, your guide in the realm of Dungeons & Dragons! Don't let his short stature and befuddling riddles fool you, this magical master controls the strange forces at work during any adventure.

Dungeon Master is a Support, Healing, and Gold Find Champion who is always eligible for an adventure, though he may leave you with a frightened Uni for a few areas. He enjoys mentoring younger Champions, and helps everyone be their ultimate best! When you want to add him to your formation you can swap him with Asharra (Slot 6)

Ia. Localization Wide Release

In addition to Dungeon Master's release, April 27th is also the wide release of our first round of localization for the game! We've localized the game into French, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Latin American Spanish, and Simplified Chinese and are excited to welcome a more global audience into Idle Champions!

Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Master

III. Dungeon Master's Design

For many of the CNE team, the 1983 animated television series Dungeons & Dragons was an entry point into the world of D&D. Watching those six friends on their adventures was the impetus to try out the game that inspired the show. As the team mulled over all of the classic characters available to turn into the 100th Champion, they knew it had to be something extra special. The idea of paying homage to that original cartoon, as well as the important role the DM plays in guiding our own adventures, was the perfect love letter to the hobby that we all enjoy!

You can see more excitement over this classical 1980s D&D cartoon character coming to Idle Champions in this IGN Article!

Learning and helping others are the two most important traits that Dungeon Master tries to impart to all his party members. He enjoys mentoring younger Champions, and buffs everyone as he teaches With Patience, Young Ones! If he's around when you transition into an area, Dungeon Master offers Words of Encouragement that grant temporary hit points. But he often pulls a Disappearing Act as he must leave the formation for other important matters. When that happens, the adorable but nervous Uni the Unicorn fills his spot and helps increase the team's gold find. Finally, because he's the DM and can make his own rules, Dungeon Master is eligible to start in all adventures, even if a restriction would say otherwise!

Dungeon Master's Specializations show off some of his unique powers. Special Guest Star allows him to bring a Champion along with him into the formation, even if that Champion was ineligible due to adventure restrictions. Where Did He Go This Time? and Fear Not, Champions! offers you a bit of control over how often Dungeon Master leaves the formation, granting an additional bonus to his buffs when the weighted choice occurs. His mighty, magical abilities culminate in his Ultimate Attack, Invigorate, which immediately recharges the Ultimate ability of another Champion who has the longest to wait!

IV. Dungeon Master's Abilities

Basic Attack

  • Magic Missile — Dungeon Master raises his hands, and 1 or more white rays strike a random enemy.

Formation Abilities

  • Patience, Young Ones! — Dungeon Master increases the damage of all Champions by +100% for each Champion in the formation that is 20 years or younger, stacking multiplicatively. If the sum of the six youngest Champions' ages is 100 years or less, the bonus is increased by 400%. This effect applies even if Dungeon Master is "away" due to Disappearing Act.
  • Words of Encouragement — Dungeon Master adds 50 temporary hit points to the entire party upon entering an area when Dungeon Master is present.
  • Disappearing Act — Upon entering a new area, there is a 50% chance that Dungeon Master does not appear in the formation and is replaced by a frightened Uni the Unicorn. While Dungeon Master is away, the formation's gold find is increased by +100%. If you return to a previously completed area, Dungeon Master is always with the formation.
  • Dungeon Master Rules — Dungeon Master is eligible to start in all adventures, even if the Patron, Variant, or other restrictions would say otherwise.

Specializations

  • Special Guest Star — Dungeon Master uses his powers to plane shift in one random Champion that is normally not eligible for the adventure. If there are any bench seats with no eligible Champions, an ineligible Champion from those seats is always chosen. Otherwise an ineligible champion from a random seat is chosen. The Champion can not be from Dungeon Master's seat.
  • Where Did He Go This Time? — The chance Dungeon Master doesn't join the formation in Disappearing Act is increased to 75%, and gold find amount is also increased by +100%
  • Fear Not, Champions! — The chance Dungeon Master doesn't join the formation in Disappearing Act is decreased to 25%, and the temporary hit points gained by Words of Encouragement are increased by +100%.

Ultimate Ability

  • Invigorate — Dungeon Master waves his hands, and the Ultimate ability with the longest remaining cooldown immediately recharges. The cooldown for this Ultimate is set to the time the recharged Ultimate had left. Dungeon Master increases the damage of all Champions in the formation by +400% for half of the time his Ultimate is cooling down.

V. Dungeon Master’s Equipment

Slot 1: Global DPS
Slot 2: Global DPS
Slot 3: Patience, Young Ones!
Slot 4: Words of Encouragement
Slot 5: Disappearing Act
Slot 6: Invigorate

VI. Conclusion

It's thanks to you, our community, that we've been able to make this game for 5 years and 100 Champions! We hope that you have a fantastic time using Dungeon Master in new and fun ways in your formation, and that he brings a nostalgic smile to your face when he appears.

What do you think about Dungeon Master? And who would you like to see join the formation in the next 100 Champions? If you have feedback, let us know in a Community Q&A or Champion feedback post on the Idle Champions Subreddit, on the Steam forums, or on the Official Idle Champions Discord!

Dungeons & Dragons Shaka

III. Shaka's Design

It’s been truly wonderful to work with Shareef Jackson, a passionate STEM diversity advocate and founder of Math Looks Good LLC, which provides math and physics tutoring services. He’s been featured in the New York Times, the Smithsonian, the Guardian, NPR, Scientific American, and MacLean's talking about science and technology. Shareef has been on Rivals of Waterdeep not just as the tiefling warlock Shaka, but stepping into the Dungeon Master role for two of their seasons!

While helping his adopted family through Avernus, Shaka made a pact with the Celestial Kagoya and now uses those powers to focus on healing and support. He can boost damage with A Celestial Puzzle, provide shielding with Celestial Resistance, and further amplify his abilities through specialization choices.

If more direct action is needed, Shaka can summon a Wall of Light and choose to Blind or Disintegrate enemies. The Blinding Wall of Light will push enemies away from the formation and cause their attacks to miss, while the Disintegrating Wall of Light will kill or damage those attempting to do his friends harm!

IV. Shaka's Abilities

Basic Attack

  • Eldritch Blast — A beam of crackling green shoots towards an enemy, dealing damage.

Formation Abilities

  • A Celestial Puzzle — Shaka attempts to solve a celestial puzzle with the potential for great rewards. Four random slots in the formation are assigned a random tag. For each Champion in those slots that match the slot's tag, Shaka buffs the party by 100%, stacking multiplicatively. Tags pull from a fixed set of odds, with two being "easy", one "medium", and one "hard";
    • Easy: male, female (non-binary Champions count in either)
    • Medium: support, dps, gold
    • Hard: human, kobold, elf, dwarf, tiefling
  • Celestial Resistance — Shaka adds 10 temporary hit-points to the entire party when changing areas. This is increased by 25% for each A Celestial Puzzle slot that is filled properly, stacking additively (ie. +100% with 4 slots filled properly). This ability can be buffed by upgrades, equipment, and feats.
  • Feats or Famine — Shaka increases the effect of A Celestial Puzzle by 20% for each puzzle slot he's adjacent to, stacking multiplicatively. This ability can be buffed by equipment and feats. Buffs apply to the post-stack value.

First Specializations

The first set of specializations deal with the ability A Tough Puzzle:
  • Sunday Edition — A fifth slot in the formation is assigned a random tag and can be matched to further increase A Celestial Puzzle.
  • Better Luck Next Time — The slots chosen for A Celestial Puzzle are rerolled. Note that the rerolled slots and tags are consistent for the adventure, so you can't use Potions of Specialization to repeatedly reroll for different slots (if you do respec and pick the other spec will swap back to the original slots/tags).

Second Specializations

Another set of specializations determine how Shaka’s Ultimate works:
  • Blinding Wall of Light — Unlocks the Blinding Wall of Light ultimate, which pushes enemies back and then appears near the formation and causes enemies that pass through it to miss with most of their attacks.
  • Disintegrating Wall of Light — Unlocks the Disintegrating Wall of Light ultimate, which appears close to where enemies spawn and can cause enemies that pass through it to instantly be killed; enemies not killed take additional damage for the next little while.

V. Shaka's Equipment

Slot 1: Global DPS
Slot 2: Global DPS
Slot 3: A Celestial Puzzle
Slot 4: Celestial Resistance
Slot 5: Feast or Famine
Slot 6: Ultimate Cooldown

VI. Conclusion

We’re very excited to have Shaka joining Idle Champions, and excited to see him lending his skills to the rest of the Champions! What do you think about Shaka? If you have feedback, let us know in a Community Q&A or Champion feedback post on the Idle Champions Subreddit, on the Steam forums, or on the Official Idle Champions Discord!

A young elven wizard is on a pilgrimage to the Grandfather Tree, and she has hired the Champions to escort her.

Year 3 Champion: Krydle

A Charismatic Leader, a dashing thief and poet, Krydle is the quintessential rogue with a heart of gold. A resident of Baldur's Gate, Krydle rejects the upper city political machinations of his estranged father Coran, but nevertheless has familiarity of the city's nobles and their schemes, as well those of the city's criminal network. Certainly a handy chap to know...

Krydle is a DPS and Support Champion. His legendary charm buffs other Champions based on their charisma, and his Thieves Cant ability amplifies this buff for each rogue in the party. When you want to add Krydle to your formation, you can swap him with Celeste (Slot 2).

She hit the lout with such surprising force that he flopped to the floor like a sackful of mullet. Over the years, I’ve come to call her a friend. Underneath Catti-brie’s rough exterior lies a heart of gold. She cares deeply for her friends and will protect what she holds dear without fail. If she takes a shine to you, be sure to count your lucky pennies, because her enemies rarely fare well for long."
    ~Volothamp Geddarm
Catti-brie is a DPS and Support Champion. Her Powerful Draw and Critical Hit abilities help her deal damage at long range, while her Mark for Death weakens enemies. When you want to add Catti-brie to your formation, you can swap her with Minsc (Slot 7).

III. Designing Krydle

We were thrilled to collaborate with Jim Zub and his vision of Krydle, as seen in the Legends Baldur's Gate comics, to bring him to Idle Champions.

We wanted his abilities to reflect his natural charm as a charismatic leader, but leaning towards his support role as we have Minsc and Delina already in the DPS role for the Baldur's Gate crowd. With this in mind, he buffs the back of the formation with his From the Shadows ability, and his charisma assists the party as a whole with his Charismatic Leader ability.

Another important aspect of Krydle's identity is his roguish side and rejection of his nobility, with this in mind we created his Thieves Cant ability to buff rogues even further - acknowledging him as a prince in the criminal world. Many of his friends and allies, like Shandie, Minsc, and Delina are already in Idle Champions and he looks forward to joining them in more adventures.

IV. Krydle's Abilities

Basic Attack

  • Reverse Pickpocket — Krydle attacks a random enemy with his daggers. While doing so, he reverse pick-pockets a smokepowder bomb onto their person, which explodes for extra damage after 3 seconds if the enemy is not killed in the meantime.

Formation Abilities

  • From The Shadows — Increase the damage of all Champions in the back two columns of the formation by 100%; this effect is doubled on Heroes of Baldur's Gate, including Krydle himself.
  • Charismatic Leader — Krydle provides buffs based on the CHA scores of other Champions in the formation:
    • Lead With Flair — Krydle's damage is increased by 100% for each Champion in the formation with a CHA score of 12-16, stacking multiplicatively. Buffs apply to the post-stack value.
    • Wild Cards — Krydle increases the damage of Champions with a CHA score of 11 and lower or 17 and higher by 200%
  • Thieves Cant — Increase the effect of Charismatic Leader by 100% for each Rogue in the formation, stacking multiplicatively.
  • Specializations

    • Close Up Magic — Increases the effect of Charismatic Leader: Lead With Flair by 200%.
    • Training Camp — Increase the effect of Charismatic Leader: Wild Cards by 200%.

Ultimate Ability

  • Distracted Strike — Krydle appears from the shadows behind a random enemy and brutally backstabs it for massive damage. The damage of this attack is increased by 200% for each Hero of Baldur's Gate in the formation (stacking multiplicatively).

V. Krydle's Equipment

Idle Champions: The Running 2
Posted in Idle Champions.

It's a once-in-a-human-lifetime event: an acorn from the ancient Grandfather Tree will soon fall into the forest below. These acorns are among the holiest of relics, and a young Harper wizard has recruited the Champions to help them make the journey to recover this prize for Silverymoon.

However, as the party makes their journey towards the Grandfather Tree, the very forest itself seems to fight their advance. Eladrin from the Feywild, the plane of Faerie, attack the party — and Drow from the Underdark soon show up as well...

The Running 2 introduces Spurt, the Kobold Inventor played by Chris Perkins on Critical Role, and brings back Catti-brie, Human Fighter and Companion of the Hall. Players will have until Monday, May 13th, 2019 at 12:00pm PDT, to unlock them!

New Champion: Spurt

Spurt the Kobold Inventor is crafty and quick with his hands. He builds improvised weapons in the hope of gaining some new advantage in combat. Spurt never knew he would have such lasting appeal when he met a mighty group of adventurers in a cave, but here we are. Packed to the gills with his "awesome" inventions this clever kobold brings his 11-days of life experiences to the Champions, along with a really cool 'Centi-pult'!
Spurt is a clever Kobold Inventor and Support Champion. He buffs the party with his Centipede Net, Wa-spiration, Pack Tactics, and Heroic Sacrifice abilities.

When you want to add Spurt to your formation, you can swap him with Nayeli (Slot 3). For more information about our latest Champion, check out the Idle Champion Spotlight: Spurt dev blog!

Returning Champion: Catti-brie

"When I first laid eyes on Catti-brie, she had just punched a rather menacing fellow who was threatening to break every bone in my body.

Balance Update: Catti-brie can now cause double, triple, or higher crits if her crit chance is above 100%. At 100%-199% crit chance she will always crit, with a chance to hit for double crit damage. At 200%-299% crit chance she will always double crit, with a chance to cause 3x crit damage. These higher crits show a (xN) in their hit text, with the N being the crit multiplier that was applied. When you want to add Catti-brie to your formation, you can swap her with Minsc (Slot 7).

Year Two Variants

  • Delusions of Grandeur — Spurt and his Centipult start in the formation, taking up two slots. The Centipult launches centipedes at random enemies, enraging them and increasing their speed and damage.

  • Elves are Wild — All Elves (Elf, Eladrin, Drow) & Half-Elves in the formation have their attack speed increased. Drow enemies now have armor. Additional Eladrin spawn in each area, and they are immune to damage until after they attack.

  • Alignment Askew — Champions are all affected by different debuffs based on the formation's alignment.

Year One Variants

  • The Wolves in the Woods — Werewolves randomly spawn and attack the party, each with special abilities. Catti-brie's silver arrows deal double damage/hits to these creatures.

  • Critter Companions — Two forest critters take up slots in the formation, increasing the damage of adjacent Champions by 400% moving around every 25 areas.

  • Catti-alone — Catti-brie is the only Champion available for this mission. Her damage increases by 40% per area, stacking multiplicatively, her attack speed is greatly increased, and her Ultimate ability cooldown is reduced to 10 seconds.

A young Harper wizard has recruited the party to help her journey to the Grandfather Tree, a holy site for elves and other creatures.
