Idle Champions: Fleetswake 6
Posted in Idle Champions.

You've been recruited by a merchant guild in Waterdeep to look into a number of mysterious missing ships over the past year. The Fair Seas Festival is a good time to look into this as people are quite open about the dangers of the sea, the fury of Umberlee, and so forth.

Many people blame Umberlee for the missing ships, but the merchant guild isn't so sure...

Fleetswake 6 introduces Solaak, a kalashtar ranger played by Gabe Hicks on Idle Champions Presents: Fury of the Black Rose. Fleetswake also brings back Desmond, a werewolf ranger, as well as Orisha, an Aasimar Cleric and Bard. Players have until Monday, March 6th at 12 PM Pacific to complete their Fleetswake 6 unlocks and objectives.

I. Solaak

Being telepathic means Solaak knows who to trust, and sadly that’s not many people. But when the Kalashtar found the soul of a dragon trapped in a chasm, he formed a bond of trust like no other. Solaak now rides his dragon mentor, Tempest, into battle, and together they are unstoppable!

Solaak is a Support Champion who excels at ranged attacks, as well as aiding others who attack from a distance. His shots are even more inspiring as he fires while riding his fierce dragon companion! Once unlocked, you can find this ranger in Slot 2 opposite Celeste.

For more information on Solaak and his abilities, check out his Champion Spotlight!

Year Six Variants

  • Adventure Variant 1: On the Wings of Dragons — Search for some missing ships during Fleetswake with Solaak! Solaak, Tempest, and Levits join the formation. Levits can be moved, but not removed.
    Complete Area 75.
  • Getting to know Solaak: Solaak's Pseudodragon pet Levits takes his place in the formation. Look for Solaak riding a drake in the back of the formation!

  • Adventure Variant 2: Slings and Arrows — Search for some missing ships during Fleetswake with your best ranged attackers. Solaak, Tempest, and Levits join the formation. Levits can be moved, but not removed. The base attack cooldowns of Champions with magic and melee base attacks are increased by 10 seconds.
    Complete Area 125.
  • Getting to know Solaak: Solaak's buffs focus on Champions with ranged attacks. Make the best ranged formation possible!

  • Adventure Variant 3: A Scaly Companion — Search for some missing ships during Fleetswake with a dragon escort! Solaak, Tempest, and Levits join the formation. Levits can be moved, but not removed. A Bronze Dragon joins the formation as an escort. It takes up three spots in the formation, but doesn't do much else.
    Complete Area 175.
  • Getting to know Solaak: One of Solaak's specializations can help offset the presence of escorts in the formation. Choose wisely!

Many people blame Umberlee for the missing ships, but the merchant guild isn't so sure...

Fleetswake 5 introduces Desmond, the lyncathropic lone wolf human Ranger played by Deejay Knight on The Black Dice Society. Fleetswake also brings back Orisha, an Aasimar Cleric and Bard and Sisaspia, a Yuan-Ti Pureblood Circle of Spores Druid. Players have until Monday, March 7th at 12 PM Pacific to complete their Fleetswake 5 unlocks and objectives.

I. Desmond

Dungeons & Dragons Desmond Key Art

While on the hunt for food as a teenager, Desmond was inflicted with the curse of lycanthropy. After a lot of work and time, he's accepted his new lycanthropic nature and now savors any opportunity to unleash the beast inside if the situation arises. Since his companions travel the dark lands of Ravenloft, there are plenty of occasions to transform!

Desmond is a Support Champion whose noble heart and fearsome bite can aid his allies through even the darkest of adventures. When you want to add him to your formation you can swap him with Jarlaxle in slot 4.

II. Desmond's Stats

Race: Human Alignment: Chaotic Good
Class: Ranger Gender: Male Pronouns: He/Him
Age: 33
Affiliation: Black Dice Society

STR: 16 DEX: 15 CON: 11
INT: 11 WIS: 12 CHA: 13

Role: Support
Eligible for Patrons: Mirt, Zariel
Slot: 4 (Jarlaxle)

Dungeons & Dragons Desmond

III. Desmond's Design

The Black Dice Society tells the dark tale of six souls struggling to survive their journeys through the horrific lands of Ravenloft. When he's not giving an outstanding portrayal of a fearsome ranger, Deejay Knight prefers happier moods as a variety streamer focusing on big laughs and positivity both on stream and in his community!

Desmond's lycanthropic transformation may make him incredibly deadly, but he's a Support Champion whose primary goal is to assist his pack. That's why his Noble Heart will always be focused on increasing the damage of adjacent Champions, and when Running With The Pack he'll further increase that bonus for Lycanthropes, Druids, and other Black Dice Society Champions. As the moon waxes and wanes, so does Desmond's power and ability to buff his companions. Should any of his companions fall, Desmond will increase all Champion damage to make up for their fallen comrade.

For more information on Desmond and his abilities, check out his Champion Spotlight!

Year Five Variants

  • Adventure Variant 1: Full Moon Madness — Desmond takes up a slot in the formation, he can't be moved or removed from the formation. In Non-Boss areas, each wave creates extra sailors. They do not drop gold, or count towards quest progress.

  • Getting to know Desmond: Desmond's attack speed speeds up during the full moon can help you cut through hordes of enemies. Use his specialization to make the most of this!

  • Adventure Variant 2: New Moon Nemesis — Desmond takes up a slot in the formation, he can't be moved or removed from the formation. In Non-Boss areas, each wave spawns one additional Armored Crab with 5 armored HP. It does not drop gold or count towards quest progress. Every time a crab spawns, a random Champion is stunned for 10 seconds.

Episode 1

Disembarking from their Drow submarine ride are Freely, Orisha, Baeloth, and Havilar. They’ve arrived in the village of Hornfirth during the colorful Festival of Fools, and Orisha is once again overcome with a cryptic vision and warning that she imparts to the group. Revelry with the party and the bar patrons ensues.

A sudden ruckus nearby, including the sounds of Freely calling out in distress, cause the group to dash outside. In a nearby alley, they find the halfling protecting a red panda from a pack of wild dogs. No one wants to hurt the dogs, and between some illusions, fire, and snacks they are able to convince the dogs to run away. Freely is happy to see his old friends, and introduces the red panda as Cinnamon.

Another cry of terror rings out, and running back out of the alley the heroes find a tipsy conjurer using a spell scroll to summon fiends! Spined devils, quasits, and a nightmare appear as well as a drunken group of angry party goers who want to join the fight. Our heroes are quick to dispatch the spined devils and quasits, convince the intoxicated revelers to stand down, and persuade the nightmare to a truce. The fake Halister Blackcloak is killed, and several scrolls are found on his body. Briv makes a connection with the nightmare, who agrees to come four times when he calls, before disappearing.

Episode 2

Just as one problem is solved another commotion starts up from Heiley, a distraught festival reveler crying for help. Her husband Beirn and his friends have gone into the mountains to play a prank on the frost giant Wrerdor and his ogre servants. Normally the frost giant is a good neighbor, but the townsfolk are terrified that Wrerdor will be infuriated and attack the village. Iris the friendly beholder shows up to offer some advice on the situation and agrees to help with any plans the heroes come up with, as well as offer a new title for both Alyndra and Briv.

The group head up the mountain to try and find the pranksters before they can strike. Their way is blocked and their trip is hampered by a Sneeze Breeze trap and then a pack of angry owlbears. The creatures are quickly killed, but Orisha’s deva rewinds time to save the owlbear’s life. After casting speak with animals they discover she’s just protecting her cubs hiding in a nearby tree, so Briv casts revivify to bring the other back to life. Continuing up the mountainside, they are distracted by the sight of a flaming mountain with a massive creature flying over it that brings Havilar infernal vibes. But it’s too far away to do much about.

Eventually, they find a tunnel entrance with a sign indicating it leads to Wrerdor, and running out of the cave is a screaming woman - a member of Beirn’s crew. She relays the group put itching powder in Wrerdor’s underclothing, but the giant did not appreciate the prank and attacked. After a stern talking about the stupidity of their actions, she is sent out into the cold to head back to town while the group head into the caves to try and rescue the other eight townsfolk. After getting lost for a while they finally find the cavern with ice mephits tormenting the captured townsfolk. They defeat the creatures and free the prisoners but are informed that Wrerdor and his ogres are heading for the town to extract revenge!

Episode 3

Beirn informs everyone that he knows a quick way to get back to town, so after a few healing words they rush off. He leads them to a log flume that can be used to get down the mountain quickly as long as they can put together a raft. Havilar’s strength and Briv’s liquid metal are put to good use in crafting the raft, Alyndra oversees the building, and Baeloth and Orisha terrify and inspire the townsfolk to help. The heroes jump on the raft and head down the flume, narrowly avoiding several potential disasters including an otter dam they manage to dodge while saving the otters. With a frantic leap, they manage to exit the raft just before hitting the lake, taking a variety of cuts and scrapes but no major injuries. While the trip was dangerous, it did manage to get them in front of Wrerdor!

Bubbles the Hollyphant appears and offers to help them scare off the giant, transforming them all into were-red pandas before disappearing again. The group prepares to try and stop Wrerdor and his three ogres, putting up a wall of fire and preparing a massive pond full of bubbles. The ogres charge into battle, but some persuasive words from Havilar and Orisha, a joke from Briv, and a command to parlay from Alyndra convinces Wrerdor to talk first. The giant admits that he’s not mad, he’s just upset he was left out of the festivities. After some discussion and calming down, Wrerdor is convinced to throw his own party! They’re going to have a foam party, with drinks and snacks, and Baeloth agrees to sing for entertainment. Orisha coordinates the decorations, Briv takes over food prep, Alyndra leads some on some calming meditation, and Freely gathers up the townsfolk to join the festivities.

The party is a success! The Festival of Fools is finished with a fantastic festival of foam!

Episode 1

In the seaside port town of Echo Bay, five epic heroes arrive with invitations to a party. Orisha, Havilar, Baeloth, Melf, and the Black Viper have traveled to enjoy the Fleetswake festivities with their friend Freely. However, the party is put on hold as Freely has agreed to help a local merchant whose ship, the Muskrat, has gone missing. A local fisher confirms the ship was seen five days ago heading for the docks, but never arrived. Despite the festival, the locals are nervous and are avoiding the water.

Before they can do any more a loud bell rings out, and the whole town heads to one of the main events of the festival, a crab battle between Pumpkinhead versus Walnut! Orisha’s eyes suddenly glow and a strange voice emanates from her throat as an announcement is made that something has gone wrong. But the voice tells the heroes if they will fix what is wrong they will “forget their names”. Just as quickly as the voice came it is gone, as is their memories of it.

Suddenly a swarm of demonic geese attack the crowd, but before they can harm any innocents the heroes dispatch them with relative ease. These creatures were not actually from the abyss but had been poisoned and transformed. Asking around the town to find out more about these strange developments, our Champions discover a number of disturbing incidents over the past two months have many people on edge; fishing boats have been attacked by sharks, and many capable swimmers and dock workers have been injured or nearly drowned. Many are suspicious of the new mage high priest to Umberlee named Mistress Hoistsail. After Orisha crafts and sings a song to Umberlee to magically open the door to the one-room shrine, they head inside to question a group of worshippers, but the leader of the cultists transforms into a wereshark and attacks! While it gets a bite out of Baeloth, it’s shocked and stabbed to death!

Episode 2

As the fight with the cultists comes to a close a chaotic attack from Baeloth destroys the altar, and our Champions notice it was funneling magic from somewhere else in the caves. As they loot the bodies they find a journal and a magic key on the late cultist turned wereshark, learning these are fanatics who have come to Echo Bay to serve the will of Mistress Hoistsail. Heading back outside they discover both Freely and Havilar’s hound Zoonie are missing, but Bubbles the Hollyphant and Freely’s parrot TreAvor are there. Bubbles offers to help the group, first healing Baeloth and Black Viper and then giving Havilar the ability to speak to animals. TreAvor relays that eight pirates kidnapped Freely as he defended Zoonie and told her to run. Havilar summons her Imps and sends them off to look for Zoonie, and inspired by the idea Baeloth summons his Djinn servant Najim to create pirate outfits for the entire party.

Back in town, the party matches the key they looted to a warehouse marked by the same flying frog symbol. It’s been empty since its owner, Galid Tanter, drowned two months ago. Her death was the first of the strange incidents that have the townsfolk on edge. As they take a moment to catch up with Iris, Melf hears a whispered voice from the shadows trying to warn him of danger, but the voice is gone before he can make out the whole message. They find the warehouse on the edge of town, and while it’s supposed to be abandoned Black Viper notices that the lock has been recently oiled, indicating there’s been recent activity. Inside is mostly empty but a suspicious tapestry hides a secret passage to a back area with a massive chest, and Melf notices a magical aura coming from it. Stacks of bloodstained paperwork nearby are ships manifest including one for The Muskrat, and all the vessels were carrying spell components for very heavy conjuration magic.

Opening the chest they discover a pair of disgusting gibbering mouthers! Their horrific noises and gnashing teeth stun and disorient the heroes, and one almost manages to eat Melf! But eventually, they destroy the creatures and discover a practically brand new ladder leading deep into darkness. But having taken a lot of damage and being exhausted from the day, Havilar leaves one of her imps to guard the ladder and the group takes a well-deserved long rest.

Episode 3

The next morning while the group discusses how they want to proceed, Orisha is suddenly overtaken with a spirit. The creepy voice of the ethereal being gives much valuable advice, including a warning that time is of the essence but that there is no reasoning with the fanatics. Bubbles the holyphant reappears and promises to help, but instead curses the team to speak only in rhyme! Before the issue can be fixed Bubbles disappears again, leaving the team speaking in verse as they head down into the cave where they hope to find Zoonie, Freely, and answers.

After a perilous slide and past a dual trap, they are greeted by an acquaintance of Baeloth’s who also happens to be a member of the Bregan D’aerthe. Our Champions continue on their path and arrive at a broad sea cave with an ancient dock where wrecks of the missing ships are found. The dock and ships are covered with ghostly forms, and the deck of the ship has strong conjuration magic that is increasing in intensity.

Knowing they are short on time the team rush in. Orisha is snatched on the shore and yanked into the water by a furious sahuagin. As more sahuagin and sharks join the fight, Baeloth summons Najim to rescue Orisha. Not only does the Djinn save the aasimar but he removes the rhyming curse, but now they must speak like pirates! Fortunately, the Bregan D’aerthe shows up and destroys the underwater enemies with torpedoes, but the ghost ship suddenly disembarks and heads for the mouth of the sea cave.

Everyone scrambles onto the ship, and as they get into the hold they can hear chanting coming deep in the ship. A gruesome scene is discovered, and Mistress Hoistsail has Freely and Zoonie in a conjuring circle, in order to call forth a monstrous semi-translucent kraken!

Orisha sets the bodies on fire as Havilar pulls her unconscious friends out of the ritual circle. All of this disrupts the magic, weakening and delaying the full appearance of the kraken. Orisha, Havilar, and Black Viper engage the kraken on the deck while Baeloth attacks Mistress Hoistsail, and Melf casts dispel magic several times to get rid of the magic on the ship. Hoistsail is defeated, and after an epic battle, Baeloth is able to banish the kraken back to its plane. The Bregan D’aerthe show up to rescue the heroes from the sinking ship, and once again the Sword Coast is saved!

Do I have to watch the Twitch Livestream to participate?

All you have to do is play Idle Champions to participate! In addition to helping to craft an unforgettable show, at the completion of each vote, a new in-game reward becomes available. We hope players will enjoy checking out the previous episode's antics in the lead-up to the next episode!

With Bardic Connection Champions along the shortest path(s) between Orisha and Vlahnya are massively buffed, and Vlahnya's stacks degrade slower than they otherwise would.

IV. Orisha's Abilities

Basic Attack

  • Scorching Ray — Orisha summons three rays of fire and hurls them at up to three random targets.

Formation Abilities

  • Flaming Wings — Whenever Orisha uses her Radiant Soul Ultimate her angel wings burst aflame and Flaming Wings gains 30 stacks. Stacks decrease by 1 per second. The damage of Scorching Ray is increased by 100% plus 10% for every stack remaining (stacking additively), and when there are no stacks left her wings disappear and the damage bonus is removed. If any of Orisha's Scorching Rays kill an enemy, the stacks reset to 30, but the rate at which they decrease is increased by 20%, stacking multiplicatively. This can only occur once per attack. If Radiant Soul is used again before this ability expires the number of stacks and the rate of decrease are reset. This ability can be buffed by upgrades, equipment, and feats. Buffs apply to the total damage bonus to Scorching Ray.
  • Bardic Connection — Orisha seeks out Vlahnya in the formation and increases the damage of Champions along the shortest path(s) (via formation slot adjacencies) between herself and Vlahnya by 400%. If Vlahnya is not in the formation, this ability applies to only adjacent Champions at only 25% effectiveness. This ability can be buffed by upgrades, equipment, and feats.
  • Diva Mode — Whenever there is a boss monster on the screen, Orisha's Flaming Wings and Bardic Connection abilities are increased by 100%. This ability can be buffed by upgrades, equipment, and feats.

First Specializations

The first set of specializations deal with Flaming Wings:
  • Blazing Soul — The effect of Flaming Wings is increased by 200%.
  • Long Burn — Flaming Wings starts with and refills to 50% more stacks.

Second Specializations

The second set of specializations modify Bardic Connection:
  • Sirens' Connection — The effect of Bardic Connection is increased by 200%.
  • Fierce Connection — Orisha's damage is increased by 100% for each other Champion affected by Bardic Connection (stacking multiplicatively) and if Vlahnya is in the formation, her Enthralling Performance buff now always applies to Orisha, and Orisha counts as adjacent to her for the purpose of the Bass portion, regardless of their positions in the formation.

Ultimate Ability

  • Radiant Soul — Orisha eyes light aglow and two angel wings burst from her back (lighting aflame if she has Flaming Wings unlocked). A wave of divine energy surges across the screen damaging all enemies.

V. Orisha's Legendary Equipment

Slot 1: Self DPS
Slot 2: Global DPS
Slot 3: Buff Flaming Wings
Slot 4: Buff Bardic Connection
Slot 5: Buff Diva Mode
Slot 6: Ultimate Cooldown

Idle Champions Presents
Posted in Idle Champions.

It's difficult to believe that we've been doing weekly livestreams since October 2017. And since almost the very beginning we've had players ask us one question: "Are you going to do your own Idle Champions TRPG show?"

It's a question we had often disregarded as 'impossible' or 'unlikely' — we're fans of Critical Role, Acquisitions Incorporated, High Rollers, and so many other shows. What could we possibly do that those shows aren't already doing?

But then we had an idea...

What if we made a TRPG live play show where every cast member played their character featured in Idle Champions, with a different 'formation'/cast for each adventure? And what if when you played Idle Champions during the week leading up to each episode, you could affect the episode through decisions you made? And what if the events in each episode would then affect Idle Champions afterwards? What could that look like?

We've tried doing interactive integrations with TRPG shows before, with High Rollers and Acquisitions Incorporated: The "C" Team, so we had some ideas when it comes to these kinds of projects. What would happen if we took our lessons learned and made our own show, featuring a cast of amazing people playing the very Champions they have in Idle Champions?

Vote for the Show You Want to See

Idle Champions players will be able to influence the characters and events of upcoming Idle Champions Presents episodes through in-game daily votes. Starting on Tuesdays with the in-game daily reset (12PM PT), each vote will go live for 24 hours, with the sixth and final vote for the week ending on Monday at 12PM PT.

Daily votes will have both an In-Game Effect and a Livestream Effect. For example, if players vote for one of two Champions to be granted a boon for the next episode of Idle Champions Presents, that Champion would be granted a corresponding boon in Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms! We don't want to spoil everything that players will be able to vote for, but here's an idea of what a few of the daily votes might look like:

  • Inspiring Choice — Which (of two) Champion should receive inspiration?
    • In-Game Effect: The winner gains an in-game buff for the next week after the vote completes.
    • Livestream Effect: The winner gains inspiration (advantage on an ability check, a saving throw, or an attack roll) at the start of the next episode.

  • You're the DM Now! — Do the Champions meet goblins, or kobolds? Who explores the darkness? What funny affliction affects the chosen Champion?
    • In-Game Effect: these effects vary from nothing to altering the event structure of an event or replacing all the enemies faced during an adventure. It will vary from question to question. Have you ever wondered what would happen if you fought an army of Abyssal Chickens instead of Goblins on an adventure?
    • Livestream Effect: We don't know how this will affect the show, but chances are it will be hilarious.
  • Dice Roll! — Which Champion gains an Iris D6â„¢?
    • In-Game Effect: Idle Champions Players get their own D6 to roll in-game for a variety of prizes. If you roll a '6' you get an extra-special prize -- and there's some bad luck protection to help you get all the prizes so long as you participate in every Dice Roll! throughout the season.
    • Livestream Effect: The chosen Champion gains a special Iris D6â„¢ to add to one of their D20 rolls in the next episode.

This is just two examples of the kinds of choices players will be able to make. We've been working closely with B Dave Walters to craft additional choices and surprises to reveal over the course of the series!

But wait, there's more: we are introducing Weekly Challenges each week that will vary between easy, medium, and difficult challenges to earn additional votes for daily votes. You can save these votes up for as long as you wish, using them all on the final vote in Week 6 if you wish. The choice is up to you!

The first vote begins on Tuesday, February 16 at 12PM PT in-game. You'll want to check in every day if you want the most chances to influence Idle Champions Presents — and don't worry if you miss a vote, the In-Game Effects are applied automatically so you won't miss out entirely!

What do I need to know?

Idle Champions Presents: The Unfair Seas begins on Monday, February 22nd with the first episode broadcasting from 4PM until 7PM Pacific Time on Twitch.tv/CNEGames. Daily votes for the first episode will begin the week before, starting on Tuesday, February 16th at 12PM Pacific.

We can't wait to see how this all comes together! We hope you'll join us in discussion about Idle Champions Presents on Twitter using the #IdleChampionsPresents hashtag and tagging @IdleChampions.

Idle Champions: Fleetswake 2
Posted in Idle Champions.

A Waterdhavian merchant guild has hired the Champions to look into a series of mysterious ship disappearances over the past year.

Superstitious folk are quick to blame the Queen of the Depths, Umberlee, a malicious sea goddess known as one of the Deities of Fury. However, the merchant guild isn't convinced, and they've asked that the Champions begin their search in the Dock Ward of Waterdeep...

Fleetswake 2 runs until Tuesday, March 12th, 2019 at 12:00pm PDT, introduces The Black Viper, an infamous Human Rogue from Waterdeep, and brings back Zorbu "Thunderbolt" Natten, the Gnome Ranger!

New Champion: The Black Viper

The Black Viper was a notorious burglar, pickpocket, mugger, and assassin who died a century ago, after a long and nefarious career. Esvele Rosznar, a brash young noble, has recently adopted the Black Viper’s persona to lead a secret life of crime. Like many other nobles, Esvele gossips about the Black Viper’s exploits to lend credence to the villain’s mystique.
The Black Viper is a DPS Champion able to take advantage of Distracted Foes and deliver powerful Sneak Attacks for extra damage. Her Jewel Thief ability improves with every boss kill across all adventures.

When you want to add The Black Viper to your formation, you can swap her with Minsc (Slot 7). For more information about our latest Champion, check out the Idle Champion Spotlight: The Black Viper dev blog!

Returning Champion: Zorbu "Thunderbolt" Natten

Zorbu grew up in a small village on the slopes of the mountains south of Yartar. He lived a typical gnomish childhood: tinkering with mechanical toys, pulling pranks on unsuspecting neighbors, and exploring the woodlands covering the mountains in the company of a local dwarf ranger, Galor Rockshield.

A grizzled veteran of many battles, Galor was waging a secret battle against a clan of drow who were holed up in some deep caves near the village. He carefully struck from the shadows, attempting to drive them back into the Underdark. One night, after a particularly prolonged encounter, a drow scout followed Galor home, and on the night of the next new moon the drow and their minions descended upon the village in force. Galor saved Zorbu's life, but many others were killed, including Zorbu's parents. From that day forth, Zorbu trained under Galor as a ranger, vowing revenge upon the drow and any who claim allegiance to them.

Cunning and imaginative, Zorbu makes use of his tinkering skills to wield an impossibly large crossbow (named Thunderbolt, which is also Zorbu's nickname) and unleash clever mechanical traps against his foes.

Zorbu is a DPS and Support Champion. He increases damage against Favored Enemies for all Champions and deals extra damage to injured or hordes of enemies. When you want to add Zorbu to your party, you can swap him with Arkhan (Slot 12).

Balance Update: Zorbu's Hunter's Pack ability now targets himself in addition to adjacent champions, and the effect has been increased.

Year Two Variants

  • Umberlee's Deluge — Sea Spawn monsters appear and attack the formation, growing in number the further you progress. These Sea Spawn monsters drop no gold and do not count towards quest progress.

  • Tightfisted Foes — The Black Viper starts in the formation. Only enemies killed by The Black Viper drop gold.

  • Extra DEXterous — Champions are augmented based on their Dexterity (DEX) scores:
    • 10 or less: Global DPS reduced by 50% (stacks).
    • 11–12: Enemies move 2x faster (stacks).
    • 13–14: Gold Find increased by 25% (stacks).
    • 15–16: Global DPS increased by 50% (stacks).
    • 17–20: Increases Champion's damage by 300%.

Year One Variants

  • Thunder and Lightning — A crazy storm blows in, affecting all outdoor areas. In addition to the wind and rain, lightning strikes your formation every 5 seconds, dealing 90% of max health unavoidable damage to a random Champion. When Zorbu "Thunderbolt" Natten is hit by the effect, his next normal attack does 10x damage.

  • Crashing Waves — Only two of your formation's columns do damage at a time. Columns change every 10 areas. Start with back two (slots 4-9), then middle two (slots 2-6), then front two (slots 0-3), then front and back (0-1 & 7-9), then repeat.

  • The Shipwright's Ball — Two Shipwrights take up slots (2, 9) in the formation. The Shipwrights dance with adjacent Champions, swapping the position of two random adjacent Champions every 15 seconds (the one in slot 9 swaps 6 and 8, while the one in slot 2 swaps two of 0, 3, and 4).

Idle Champion Spotlight: The Black Viper
Posted in Idle Champions.

Once upon a time, the Rosznars were one of the most prominent families in Waterdeep — that is, until they were convicted of a serious crime and exiled over 100 years ago. They have since returned, and among their ranks the young noble woman Esvele Rosznar harbors a secret. She has assumed the identity of the Black Viper, a legendary outlaw who once terrorized Waterdeep.

Assassin. Thief. Catburglar. Pickpocket. The Black Viper is all these things and more. Esvele carefully cultivates the infamy and mystique of her alter ego as she gossips among nobles about the Black Viper's exploits. She leads a double life: one of luxury and privilege, and another where she relies on her skills and cunning to survive, where one mistake could lead to imprisonment or death.

Welcome to the Idle Champion Spotlight for the Black Viper! If you want to know more about the latest Champion, you're in the right place!

An Infamous Champion...

Warning: Potential spoilers for the Waterdeep: Dragon Heist Campaign
The Black Viper was a notorious burglar, pickpocket, mugger, and assassin who died a century ago, after a long and nefarious career. Esvele Rosznar, a brash young noble, has recently adopted the Black Viper’s persona to lead a secret life of crime. Like many other nobles, Esvele gossips about the Black Viper’s exploits to lend credence to the villain’s mystique.

The Rosznar family was convicted of slave trading — highly illegal in Waterdeep — and banished over a hundred years ago, but has since returned. The Rosznars’ inability to regain the respect they feel they deserve rankles them. The slave trade has continued in Amn and elsewhere, and it’s not like other noble houses don’t have skeletons in their closets. But just because of a little family squabble that went public, the Rosznar name has been said with a sneer for a century. As part of the family’s constant effort to prove this conception wrong and win others’ respect, Esvele has been brought up to be the most proper noble possible, partaking in lessons of etiquette, dance, and poise as befits someone of her station.

In her younger days, Esvele openly rebelled, but that behavior led to locked doors at night and house guards watching her every move during the day. So she taught herself how to pick locks, pluck keys from belts and pouches, clamber up walls, and sneak past guards — playing the perfect daughter by day while cutting loose at night. To hide her identity from those she met, she wore a hood and mask, exchanging her fine clothes for the kind of practical clothing her parents would never let her wear.

One of the things Esvele has learned is to embrace the legend of the Black Viper. When she throws back her cloak to reveal the costume she has put together, most folk toss their purses and flee. If that doesn’t work, she usually needs only to draw her dagger. Of course, some of the nobles she targets are made of sterner stuff, so Esvele has learned how to fight as well. She knows she’s playing a dangerous game, but is satisfied that at least one member of the Rosznar family is earning the respect of Waterdeep’s nobility.

Character Stats

Race: Human Class: Rogue Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
STR: 11 DEX: 18 CON: 14
INT: 11 WIS: 11 CHA: 16

The Black Viper is a DPS Champion able to take advantage of Distracted Foes to increase her damage and deliver powerful Sneak Attacks to enemies she hits for the first time. Her Aura of Infamy ability increases the effect of formation abilities she receives from Bards and Rogues in the party while her Jewel Thief ability improves with boss kills across all adventures.

We have tweaked the Black Viper's stats slightly from her character sheet in the Waterdeep: Dragon Heist book, increasing her Charisma (CHA) score from 12 to 16 for two reasons:
  • First, because when Vivka played Esvele Rosznar/Black Viper during episodes of Dice, Camera, Action! she was incredibly charming.
  • Second, because we wanted the Black Viper to be able to take advantage of Hitch's Friendly buff. It just made sense.
When you want to add the Black Viper to your formation, you can swap her with Minsc (Slot 7).

Artistic Inspiration

When it came to putting together our version of Black Viper, we immediately turned to the official cosplay that Vivid Vivka assembled for last year's Stream of Many Eyes. At an event filled with talented performers and creators (including an amazing Minsc cosplay by Beamdog's Trent Oster) Vivka's take on the Black Viper stood out.

The extra details and personality that Vivka brought to the character inspired us to focus more on her take on Waterdeep's infamous burglar/pickpocket/assassin, including her custom-made Kris push daggers. When it was time to draw and animate the Black Viper for the game, the job fell to our Art Director Adam Kosh and Senior Artist Alexis Theroux.

Vivka put a lot of work into this costume. You can even see it in motion over on Vivka's Instagram here!

Note: Some of Vivid Vivka's content on Instagram and Twitter is NSFW.

Designing the Black Viper

What is the best way to bring a legendary outlaw to life? Which Rogue abilities combine to create the Black Viper as seen in Waterdeep: Dragon Heist?

After spending time going over the 5E Rogue subclasses in the Player's Handbook and Xanathar's Guide to Everything, we came to the conclusion that this Champion needed to be both Thief and Assassin.

To adapt an Assassin's combat style to Idle Champions, we looked to Sneak Attack. It's an integral part of all Rogue designs but isn't something we've really focused on, and we wanted to bring it to the forefront of the Black Viper's design to really capitalize on Vivka's Kris push daggers.

Distracted Foes is intended to be like a cross between Sneak Attack and gaining advantage. Enemies are busy with other Champions, attacking them, so the Rogue uses that opportunity to strike for massive damage. this will really come in handy during encounters and adventures with party-wide damage or multiple tanks up front.

Aura of Infamy symbolizes the mystique of the Black Viper that Esvele cultivates. She thrives when people know who she is - and who is more likely to know of her than other Rogues and Bards? They're the outlaws, right? Once she has gained enough notoriety with her Jewel Thief ability, Ranger and Warlock abilities are included as well!

Speaking of Jewel Thief, Chris came up with something really special. We wanted to feature The Black Viper's burglary skills, and we thought: maybe she gets better with each Red Gem she finds, not just during the adventure you are on, but across all adventures. The idea is that Black Viper will be a Champion you can stick with as your DPS of choice, and that continuing to play her when you're farming gems or completing objectives has a real benefit.

  • Distracted Foes — Whenever another Champion in the formation takes damage, Black Viper deals +100% increased damage on her next attack. Stacks up to 5 times (additive). Does not trigger when Black Viper herself is the one to take the damage.

  • Aura of Infamy — Increases the effect of formation abilities from Bards and Rogues on the Black Viper by 25%.

  • Sneak Attack — Whenever Black Viper attacks an enemy for the first time, she deals 100% additional damage.

  • Jewel Thief — Whenever a boss is killed, there is a 25% chance a Red Gem drops. Red Gems are collected by the Black Viper and grand unique bonuses:
    • Red Gems collected on the current run grant the Black Viper +10% damage (stacking multiplicatively) for the current run.
    • The Black Viper also keeps a permanent count of Red Gems earned across all adventures, which unlocks buffs at certain thresholds. There are 10 total buffs to unlock.
      • 10 Gems: Aura of Infamy now also affects buffs from Rangers and Warlocks.
      • 50 Gems: Increase max stacks of Distracted Foes by 5, and increase the damage per stack by 100%.
      • 300 Gems: Increased the effect of Black Viper's gear by 25% (excluding cooldown)
      • 800 Gems: Black Viper damage x2
      • 1500 Gems: Black Viper damage x2
      • 2500 Gems: Black Viper damage x2
      • 3500 Gems: Black Viper damage x2
      • 4500 Gems: Black Viper damage x2
      • 5500 Gems: Black Viper damage x2
      • 6500 Gems: Black Viper damage x2

When it comes to Black Viper's specializations, the question you need to ask yourself is simple: am I farming, or am I pushing to my wall or attempting to complete a difficult variant?

Since the Black Viper is the first-ever Champion whose formation abilities take all of her adventures into account, you may want to go with her Collector specialization to maximize her Red Gem earning potential. If you are doing regular gem farming runs in The Mad Wizard Free Plays, this specialization will appeal to you (assuming you don't reset before even reaching Slot 7).

On the other side, Assassinate offers the most damage potential out of Black Viper, further increasing her monster-clearing potential. A 0.5 second faster attack may not seem like much, but it really helps!

  • Assassinate — Sneak Attack now also triggers against enemies that The Black Viper has already attacked once, and her base attack cooldown is lowered by 0.5 seconds after a Sneak Attack.

  • Collector — Increase Jewel Thief Red Gem drop chance to 33% and the current-run damage bonus is increased by 25%.

Ultimate Attack

When it came to putting together an awesome ultimate ability for the Black Viper, we hit a bit of a wall. Rogues are mostly known for Sneak Attacks, which we already based much of the Champion design on. What else should we add?

We eventually settled upon the more traditional ninja-inspired concept of dropping a smoke bomb for cover, allowing the Black Viper to kick some serious butt. This ultimate will prove especially helpful during encounters and adventures with formation-wide damage.

Smokescreen — All Champions takes 50% less damage for 20 seconds, and all of Black Viper's attacks are Sneak Attacks for the duration.

Equipment

Drawn by our resident in-house portrait and icon specialist, Kat, every one of the Black Viper's items is taken from Vivka's official cosplay. This proved to be especially invaluable since the version of Black Viper included in the Waterdeep: Dragon Heist TRPG book does not have a list of items outside basic 5E Rogue starting items.

  • Master Thief's Gauntlets — Ornate gauntlets perfect for hiding thieves tools inside!

  • The Black Viper's Rapier — Esvele Rosznar's ornate rapier, wielded by The Black Viper.

  • The Black Viper's Mask — Masks are iconic when it comes to legendary outlaws.

  • The Viper's Fangs — The better to Sneak Attack you with...!

  • Viper's Cloak — Concealing one's identity and intent is important for a thief - or an assassin.

  • Ostentatious Display — Some nice stolen jewels for a jewel thief.

Final Thoughts

The Black Viper is kind of like Zorro, the Dread Pirate Roberts, and Catwoman all rolled into one. We think she'll really be able to shine in certain DPS formations, especially when the buffs are coming from Aura of Infamy classes. Her Sneak Attacks hit like a truck, especially when you have multiple Champions taking damage to further buff Distracted Foes. And finally, with Jewel Thief benefiting from repeated runs, we feel like Black Viper offers an excellent incentive to stick with a DPS Champion for a long time, and one to focus on with your gem farming runs.

We look forward to seeing how she impacts the Idle Champions meta!
